Roof leak repair in Croydon

A leak does not always show where the water gets in. It can run along the timbers before it drips, or turn up as damp on an inside wall. So the first job is to get up on the roof and find the cause. Neil Stonebridge had damp showing on an internal wall. Reme came out the next day, found the problem straight away, and we replaced some tiles, fixed the guttering and re-pointed the ridge.

How we find the cause

We start with what you have noticed: where the stain or drip shows, when it appears, and whether it only happens in heavy rain or when the wind blows from one direction. Then we look at the roof from the ground and, where we can, from inside the loft, where wet timber and daylight through the boards tell their own story. Up on the roof we work outwards from the wet area, checking the tiles or slates, the ridge, any flashing or valley above it, and the gutter at the bottom. Once we know the cause, we explain it and quote for that repair.

Slipped and broken tiles

One slipped or cracked tile is enough to let the rain in. We replace broken and missing tiles and slates, and refix the ones that have slipped, on tiled and slate roofs. The replacement has to suit what is already there. Clay tiles are fired, keep their colour, and are usually small plain tiles laid in many overlapping rows. Concrete tiles are heavier, often the larger interlocking kind, and their surface roughens and dulls with age. Natural slate is thin and lasts a very long time, but each one hangs on its nails. A single slate is normally refixed with a narrow metal strip called a tingle, because the nails above it cannot be reached without lifting the course over it.

Ridge tiles

The ridge tiles run along the top of the roof, held on with mortar. When the mortar cracks or washes out, they work loose and water gets in underneath. We re-point ridge tiles, and replace the ones that are broken. On older roofs each ridge tile sits on a bed of sand and cement. Many newer roofs use a dry ridge system instead, where the tiles are fixed mechanically with clips or screws to a batten along the top, so there is no mortar to crack or wash out. Either can be repaired. When the bedding has failed along most of the ridge, we explain both options and quote for the one that suits your roof.

Roof repairs near you, at a fair price

Mary Devlin found our quote significantly less than the others she had. N J came to us after three other companies had charged and failed to fix the problem. Leaks round a chimney are often the lead flashing, and some leaks start in a blocked gutter.

More about roof repairs

Storm damage roof repair

High winds lift tiles, loosen ridges and pull away flashings. Send us a photo on WhatsApp of what you can see from the ground, and we will come and look.

Signs your roof needs a repair

Inside, the usual signs are a brown ring on a ceiling, damp at the top of a wall, a musty smell in the loft or daylight between the tiles. Outside, look for gaps in the rows, bits of tile on the path or in the gutter, a ridge that no longer runs straight, or lead that has lifted. Left alone, even a small leak soaks the battens and the felt, then the ceiling below, and wet timber can start to rot. A repair that might have been a few tiles can turn into new battens, new felt and redecorating inside.

How long a repair takes, and scaffolding

Many repairs, such as refixing a few slipped tiles or re-pointing a short run of ridge, are often finished in a day once we can get to them. Rain and strong wind can push a job back, because a wet roof is not a safe place to work. Where a roof is too high or too steep to reach safely from a ladder, we arrange the scaffold as part of the job, and it comes down once the repair is done.

What customers say

In their own words, from our Google reviews. Read more reviews.

  • “We had a leak in our roof that was causing our internal wall to show damp. ... After speaking to Reme on the phone, he promised to come out the next day to have a look, which he did. He diagnosed the problem straight away and sent me a quote that evening, which I accepted. He arranged for scaffolding to be erected that weekend as we have a townhouse, and that week came out and fixed the guttering and replaced some tiles, and did some repointing to the ridge tiles ... Would definitely recommend.”

Common questions about roof repairs

How much does a roof repair cost in Croydon?

It depends on what is wrong and how we get to it, so we do not guess from a photo. We come out, look at it, and give you a free quote. Mary Devlin called our quote very fair, and significantly less than the others she had.

Can you find where my roof is leaking?

Yes, that is the first job. Neil Stonebridge had damp on an internal wall. Reme came out the next day and diagnosed the problem straight away.

How quickly can you come out?

Ring us and we will tell you when we can get there. Neil Stonebridge had Reme out the next day, and Mary Devlin wrote of a swift response.

Will I need scaffolding?

Not always. It depends on the height of the roof and where the repair is. When it is needed we arrange it, as we did for Neil Stonebridge's townhouse, and we tell you when we quote.

Do you take on small roof repairs?

Yes. One slipped tile is still worth a call. N J had a minor roof repair done by us after three other companies had failed to fix it.

Do you repair storm damage?

Yes. Lifted and broken tiles, loose ridges and damaged flashings after high winds. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will come and look.

Do I need to be in while you repair the roof?

For part of it, it helps. If the leak shows inside, we may want to see the stain and look in the loft, so someone needs to let us in for that. The repair itself is done from outside, so you do not have to stay in all day.

Will you take the broken tiles away?

Yes. Broken tiles, old mortar and anything else that comes off the roof are cleared away when we finish. Sound tiles that we lift to reach a repair go back on.
