Fascia and soffit repairs in Croydon
Fascias are the boards along the edge of the roof that the gutters are fixed to. Soffits close in the underside. When they rot or crack, water and birds can get in, and the gutters start to sag. We repair damaged fascia boards and soffits. Vernon Soare had his soffits and fascia boards repaired and painted as part of the work on his roof.

Timber or uPVC
Older houses mostly have painted timber fascias and soffits. Timber is fine while the paint holds, but once water gets behind the gutter or into a crack it starts to rot, usually at the joints and the corners first. Most replacement boards now are uPVC, which does not rot and needs no painting, only a wash now and then. Soffits come solid or vented, and vented boards let air into the roof space, which helps keep the loft dry.
Fascias and soffits replaced
When the boards are past repairing, we replace them. Where the boards are sound, capping them is another option. R T had us cap their fascia, along with a new gutter and downpipe. Capping, sometimes called cladding, covers the old boards with a thin uPVC skin and leaves the timber in place. That only works where the timber is sound. Over rot it hides the problem rather than fixing it, so we only suggest capping where the boards underneath are in good order.

How the boards are replaced
The gutters come down first. Then the old boards are taken off, and the ends of the rafters behind them are checked, because rot in a fascia can spread back into them. Any rotten timber is cut out and repaired. The new soffit goes up, the new fascia is fixed to the rafter ends, and the felt and the bottom row of tiles at the eaves are put right where they need it. Last, the guttering and downpipes go back on, or new ones are fitted.
“Reme was excellent with his communication, time keeping and general management of the project.”

The gutters hang from the fascias, so it often makes sense to do both at once. Tell us what you are seeing and we will quote for what needs doing.

Bargeboards
Bargeboards run up the sloping edges of a gable end. We repair and replace them along with the fascias and soffits.
Signs, timing and scaffolding
Flaking paint, soft or split timber, gaps opening between the fascia and the soffit, a gutter starting to lean outwards, and birds or wasps going in and out under the eaves are the usual signs. Left alone, rot spreads along the boards and into the rafter ends, and the gutters lose their fixing. Once the access is up, one side of an ordinary house is often done in a day or two, though the length of the roofline, the corners and what turns up behind the old boards all change that. Most of the work is too high and too long for ladders, so it is usually done from a scaffold or tower, which we arrange as part of the job.

What customers say
In their own words, from our Google reviews. Read more reviews.
“Reme and the TSR team provided us with excellent service, a major overhaul of our high level roof plus repairs to/painting of soffits and fascia boards ... The scaffolding team working with Reme was extremely careful and worked around some difficult access problems to facilitate the roof repairs. Photographs of the roof pre and post the work gave confidence that the work was needed and had been carefully completed. Reme was excellent with his communication, time keeping and general management of the project. He also came back personally to deal with a couple of snagging items after the main work was completed, a welcome attention to detail. Highly recommended.”

Common questions about fascias and soffits
What are fascias and soffits?
Fascias are the boards along the edge of the roof that carry the gutters. Soffits are the boards underneath, closing the gap back to the wall. Bargeboards do the same job up the sloping edge of a gable.
Do the fascias need replacing with the guttering?
Not always. If the boards are sound, the guttering can go back on them. If they are rotten, that is the time to replace them. We tell you which once we have looked.
Can you repair and paint them instead?
Yes, where the boards are sound. Vernon Soare had his soffits and fascia boards repaired and painted.
Do you do bargeboards?
Yes. We repair and replace bargeboards along with the fascias and soffits.
How much do new fascias and soffits cost?
It depends on the length of the roofline, the height and the state of the boards, so we do not guess from a photo. We come out, look at it, and give you a free quote.
Are uPVC fascias better than wood?
They do not rot and do not need painting, which is why most replacements are uPVC now. Painted timber can still suit an older house where you want to keep the look, as long as the paint is kept up. We go through both when we quote.
What happens to the old boards?
They come away with us, along with any old guttering and downpipes we replace.
