Roof replacement in Croydon
Sometimes a roof has had more repairs than it is worth. The tiles keep slipping, the leaks keep coming back, or the roof is simply worn out. We get up, look at it properly, and tell you what we find. Vernon Soare had photographs of his roof before and after the work, which gave him confidence the work was needed and had been carefully completed.

Signs a roof is near the end
One problem on its own is usually a repair. The signs of a worn out roof come together: tiles slipping in several places at once, tiles flaking or crumbling right across a slope, a roof line that dips between the walls, daylight through the boards in the loft, and damp patches that move from room to room. When the covering, the battens and the felt have all reached the end of their life, putting it off means paying for repairs that do not last, and in time for wet ceilings and rotten timbers underneath.
New roofs, from start to finish
A new roof means scaffolding, taking off the old roof and laying the new one, with new lead where it is needed. Reme manages the job himself and keeps you updated. Vicky Coray had a roof installed and wrote that Reme managed the works from start to finish and updated them throughout the process.

How a re-roof is done
The scaffold goes up first, with a working platform along the eaves. The old tiles or slates, battens and felt are stripped, and the rafters underneath are checked and put right where they need it. A breathable underlay goes on next, then new battens, then the tiles or slates, laid from the gutter upwards. The ridge, the hips, the valleys and the lead round chimneys and walls are finished last. On most roofs this is a good moment to look at the fascias, soffits and gutters as well, while the scaffold is already up.

“Reme was excellent with his communication, time keeping and general management of the project.”
GoogleVelux and roof windows
We fit Velux and other roof windows, in a new roof or into the roof you already have, in tile or slate. The window sits in a flashing kit that laps under the tiles above and over the tiles below, so the rain runs round it. We also replace old roof windows that have started to leak or let in draughts, and when a leak shows round one, it is often the flashing rather than the window. If you want roof windows in a new roof, tell us when we come to quote and we will include them. You can see roof windows on our jobs in the photos on this page, in red tiles, slate and clay.
More about new roofs
Tile and slate roofs
We work on tiled and slate roofs. The photos on this page are our own: concrete tiles, clay tiles and slate. Concrete interlocking tiles are quick to lay and hard wearing, and cover many newer roofs. Clay plain tiles suit a lot of older houses and hold their colour well, though far more of them go on each square metre. Natural slate is thin and long lasting, and is the usual covering on Victorian houses. A change of material can change the weight on the roof, so the timbers are looked at before a heavier covering goes on.
How long a new roof takes
There is no single answer. On an ordinary house a re-roof is measured in days rather than hours, and a bigger or more complicated roof, with valleys, dormers or chimneys, takes longer. Rain and high wind stop work on an open roof, so the weather has the last word. We talk you through how the job will run when we quote.

Google“Reme and the TSR team provided us with excellent service, a major overhaul of our high level roof plus repairs to/painting of soffits and fascia boards ... The scaffolding team working with Reme was extremely careful and worked around some difficult access problems to facilitate the roof repairs. Photographs of the roof pre and post the work gave confidence that the work was needed and had been carefully completed. Reme was excellent with his communication, time keeping and general management of the project. He also came back personally to deal with a couple of snagging items after the main work was completed, a welcome attention to detail. Highly recommended.”

Common questions about new roofs
How much does a new roof cost?
It depends on the size of the roof, its height, what it is covered in and what is underneath, so we do not guess from a photo. We come out, look at it, and give you a free quote.
Do I need a new roof or just a repair?
We look at it and tell you. Tiles that keep slipping and leaks that keep coming back after repairs are signs a roof is near the end. If a repair will do the job, it is the cheaper answer.
Do you arrange the scaffolding?
Yes. Vernon Soare's roof had a scaffolding team working round some difficult access, and he wrote that they were extremely careful.
Will you keep me updated?
Yes. Vicky Coray wrote that Reme updated them throughout, and Vernon Soare had photographs of the roof before and after the work.
Do you fit Velux windows?
Yes. Velux and other roof windows, in a new roof or into the roof you already have, in tile or slate. Tell us when we come to quote and we will include them.
Can you replace an old Velux window?
Yes. We take the old window and its flashing out and fit the new one with new flashing, so it sits properly in the tiles around it. If an old window is only leaking round the edge, it may be the flashing, and we tell you which before quoting.
Can I stay in the house while the roof is replaced?
Yes, most people do. In normal practice the roof is stripped a section at a time and covered over when work stops, so the house is kept out of the weather. It is noisy, and it is worth clearing or covering what is in the loft, as dust and grit can fall through while the old roof comes off.
Who clears the old roof away?
We do. Stripping a roof makes a lot of waste, and removing it is part of the job.
