Gutter repair in Croydon
Damaged or overflowing guttering does not just look untidy. It can let rainwater run down the walls and cause damp and damage. We repair leaking joints, broken brackets and sagging runs. j facey had water leaking from the gutters every time it rained. We found the problem was the gutter brackets, and changed them.
Why a gutter leaks or overflows
Before anything is replaced, we work out the cause. A drip from one spot is usually a joint whose rubber seal has perished, or two lengths that have pulled apart. Water spilling over the front along a run often means a blockage, or a gutter that has lost its fall and no longer runs towards the outlet. A run that sags between brackets needs the brackets replaced or more of them added. A blocked downpipe is cleared from the top or at the bend near the ground. Most of these are small jobs, often done in one visit.

Gutter shapes and materials
Most gutters on houses round here are plastic, often called uPVC, in one of a few shapes. Half-round is the classic curved profile. Square gutters have a flat bottom and straight sides. Deeper profiles carry more water off a big roof, and ogee gutters copy the moulded look of old cast iron. Some older houses still have cast iron, which is heavy and lasts a long time when it is kept painted, but rusts at the joints when it is not. A new run needs to suit the roof it drains, and to join neatly to any gutter it meets.

A gutter that overflows all along its length is often just full. A gutter that drips from one spot, sags between brackets or spills even when it is clear needs a repair. If you are not sure which yours is, we look and tell you. N J had the gutters cleaned and repaired on both properties.

Gutters are fixed to the fascia boards along the edge of the roof. If the boards behind them are rotten, they need doing first. And a gutter that overflows onto a roof or a wall can be where a leak starts.

Signs, and what happens if you leave it
Look for water pouring over the edge in heavy rain, green stains or moss on the brickwork below, plants growing out of the gutter, drips from the joints, and damp patches indoors at the top of an outside wall. Left alone, that water soaks the brickwork, washes out the mortar joints, rots the fascia board behind the gutter and can get under the bottom row of tiles. Water landing at the foot of a wall splashes back up it and keeps the base of the wall damp too.
Ladders, towers and scaffolding
A gutter on a bungalow or over a ground floor bay can often be reached from a ladder. A long run on a three storey house, or a gutter above a conservatory or a glass roof, needs a tower or a scaffold to work safely. Where it does, we arrange it as part of the job.

Why is my gutter leaking?
Often it is a joint or a bracket. j facey had water leaking every time it rained, and the problem was the brackets. We come out, find the cause and fix it.
Do you clean gutters as well?
Yes, with a gutter vacuum. Gutter cleaning has its own page, and we can do a clean and a repair on the same house. N J had the gutters cleaned and repaired on both properties.
Can you replace all my guttering?
Yes. Full guttering replacement, downpipes included. Sudeene Tyrell asked us to quote for all their guttering, and Richard Purnell had his replaced.
Do you take on small gutter jobs?
Yes. A few brackets or one leaking joint is worth a call.
How much does gutter work cost?
It depends on the length of guttering, the height and what needs doing, so we do not guess from a photo. We come out, look at it, and give you a free quote.
Do I have to get rid of the old guttering?
No. When we replace a run, the old gutter, brackets and downpipes go with us, along with the moss and silt we clear out.
Do I need to be in while you repair the gutters?
Not usually. Gutter work is all outside, so if we can reach the run that needs doing you do not have to be there. If a side gate is normally locked, tell us when we book.
Should I choose half-round or square gutters?
Either works. It mostly comes down to matching what is there, especially on a semi or a terrace where your gutter runs into the one next door, and to the size of the roof. We suggest a profile when we quote.
