Gutter cleaning in Croydon
Overflowing gutters full of moss, leaves and silt, cleared out with a gutter vacuum by a local roofer in Shirley. A free quote first, and the gutters checked while we are there.
Blocked gutters, cleared out
Gutters fill up slowly and then all at once. Moss, leaves and silt settle along the bottom, the outlet clogs, and the next heavy shower goes over the front instead of down the pipe. We clean them out with a gutter vacuum, as in the photos on this page, and clear the outlets so the water can get away again. N J had the gutters cleaned and repaired on both properties.

How the clean is done
We start with where the water is going wrong: which runs spill over, and whether each downpipe is taking water. The gutter vacuum works from the ground, so there are no ladders against your walls, and it lifts the moss, leaves and silt out of the gutter along each run, including the corners and the stretch above the outlet where it packs down hardest. Then we clear the outlets and the top of each downpipe as far as we can reach. Before we go, we tell you what we found, including anything that needs more than a clean.
Why gutters block round here
Trees are the main cause. Roads across Croydon and Bromley are lined with them, and a single oak, sycamore or plane can fill a gutter in one autumn. Moss is the other. It grows on the tiles, especially concrete tiles on a shaded slope, and every heavy rain washes some of it down into the gutter, where it sets into a mat. Add silt, seeds and the odd ball, and a gutter that was clear two years ago can be half full without anyone noticing from the ground.

Signs your gutters need a clean
Water spilling over the front in heavy rain is the clearest sign. Others are grass or small plants growing out of the gutter, green streaks or moss on the brickwork below, a downpipe that stays dry in a downpour, and damp patches inside at the top of an outside wall. If water pours from one spot rather than along the whole run, a joint may have failed, and that is a repair rather than a clean.
“Arrived promptly and worked well.”
GoogleA clean, or a repair?
Because we are roofers, we look at more than the gutter itself. If a joint drips, a bracket has gone or the run has lost its fall, we tell you and quote for the repair before doing anything. The same goes for slipped tiles at the bottom of the roof or a rotten fascia board.

More about gutter cleaning
What happens if they are left
A full gutter holds water against the fascia board behind it, and over time the timber rots. The overflow soaks the brickwork, washes out the mortar and can find its way indoors. The weight of wet silt pulls on the brackets until the gutter sags and stops draining towards the outlet at all. Water landing at the foot of the wall splashes back up it. A clean costs far less than any of those repairs.
How often to have them cleaned
It depends on the trees. For most houses once a year is a sensible starting point, ideally after the leaves have come down in late autumn. A house under big trees, or with a mossy roof, may need it twice. If your gutters overflow when it rains, they are due whatever the calendar says.

Common questions about gutter cleaning
How do you clean the gutters?
With a gutter vacuum, which lifts the moss, leaves and silt out of each run. Then we clear the outlets and the tops of the downpipes, and tell you what we found.
Do you clear the downpipes too?
We clear the outlet and the top of each downpipe as part of the clean. If a pipe is blocked further down, we tell you and say what it would take to clear it.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Once a year suits most houses, after the leaves have come down. Under big trees, or below a mossy roof, it may need doing twice. If they overflow when it rains, they are due.
Can you clean the gutters while I am out?
Yes. Our gutter vacuum works from the ground, so no ladders are needed and nobody has to be in. That also helps if there is no back gate to bring a ladder through.
What happens to what you clear out?
We take it away. The moss, leaves and silt go with us, not into your bin.
Do you take on small gutter cleaning jobs?
Yes. A bungalow, a garage, or the one gutter over the back door that keeps overflowing are all worth a call.
What if the gutter needs repairing?
We tell you what we found and quote for the repair before doing anything. Many repairs, such as a bracket or a joint, are small.
Do you clean gutters in Bromley?
Yes. We are based in Shirley, right on the Croydon and Bromley border, and clean gutters across both, including Beckenham, West Wickham and Orpington.
How much does gutter cleaning cost?
It depends on the length of guttering, how high it is and how full it is, so we do not guess from a photo. We come out, look at it, and give you a free quote.
